Jane Goodall’s Pervasive Presence
My personal experience with Goodall began about the time I was beginning to read, and a photo of Jane with her Chimpanzees called to me from a pile of National Geographic Magazines fanned decoratively across the coffee table between a brass ash tray and orange lidded decanter. The photos of her facing the chimps and puckering ("talking" to the chimps) attracted me for many reasons. One was that Jane, in her simple ponytail and no make-up, was famous. She could be outdoorsy and travel and not wear make-up. This was a different kind of woman.
I studied the pictures, but the writing was too hard for me. But I would be able to read it if I learned to read better. I knew, even at four years old, that if I could read, I could go to Africa with Jane. And we saved the magazine long enough for me to read her words.
Still Fascinated with Jane
Decades later I attended her lecture at the Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. She told us of her fascination with animals, so much so that as child she brought worms into her bed. This connection to the animals of the world never left her. Her dire words of warning managed a considerable measure of optimism-if we can see animals as worthy of existing. One of the key take-a-ways from her lecture was that she’d found Chimps to be much like humans, with culture, kindness, and cruelty all blending into their culture. Surely, if we are worthy to exist, so are they. Her life with chimps and her support of the natural world imbues her writing with urgency supported with research and empathy.
